Shanties
Randy Dandy-o

Although many of the verses refer to working at the capstan to get the ship out of the docks and on its way, Stan  Hugill's 'Shanties of the Seven Seas' says it was also popular for working at the pumps as well as the capstan. With its mentions of heading down the Hill, round the Horn and up to Valippo Bay, it is hardly surprising that he says this shanty was heard mainly aboard the old Cape Horners.

There do not seem to be any verses other than the eight given by Hugill, but many recordings omit some of them, and almost all change the order in which they are sung. A 1967 recording by The Young Tradition keeps Hugill's order but omits verses 2,3 and 4, while versions by Nelson's Blood (below) and The Shanty Crew give them in the order 1-2-4-3-6-7-5-8, as does a 6-verse version by Sharp As Razors omitting Hugill's verses 2 and 5.

Now we are ready to head for the Horn,

Way, hay, roll and go!

Our boots an' our clothes boys are all in the pawn,

To my rollicking randy dandy O!

Heave a pawl, oh, heave away,
Way, hay, roll and go!
The anchor's on board an' the cable's all stored,
To my rollicking randy dandy O!

Soon we'll be warping her out through the locks,
Where the pretty young girls all come down in their flocks,

Sing goodbye to Sally and goodbye to Sue,
For we are the buckos who can kick her through.

Come breast the bars, bullies, heave her away,
For soon we'll be rolling her 'way down the Bay,

Heave away, bullies, you parish-rigged bums,
Take your hands from your pockets and don't suck your thumbs.

Roust her up, bullies, the wind's drawing free,
Let's get the glad-rags on and drive her to sea.

Oh, man the stout capstan and heave with a will,
For soon we'll be driving her 'way down the hill.

We're outward bound for Vallipo Bay,

Way, hay, roll and go!

Get cracking, my lads, 'tis a hell of a way!

To my rollicking randy dandy O!

Heave a pawl, oh, heave away,
Way, hay, roll and go!
The anchor's on board an' the cable's all stored,
To my rollicking randy dandy O!

Soon we'll be drivin' her 'way down the hill

The east coast of South America from Cape Horn past Argentina and Brazil to the Amazon was often referred to by sailors as "the hill".

That's all
