The 2 Anchors

The 2 Anchors first formed as a 4-piece shanty crew singing songs of the sea and shanties in 2007.  Due to various circumstances this first incarnation of the group last sang together in 2009 and disbanded shortly thereafter.

The group re-formed with a completely different line-up behind two of the original members in 2012 and love to entertain crowds in large and small venues with their special brand of shantynanigans.
Crowd participation is encouraged and a party atmosphere created with a skilful blend of harmonies and foot stomping action.

The band is affiliated to the EFDSS and consists of:

Skipper Jack (Steve)

The Skipper has been involved in the folk world for over 20 years and with the 2 Anchors since its inception.

Possessing a rich and powerful voice he leads the 2 Anchors in song whenever they are in dock

He has been playing the whistle for over 20 years and has a highly ornamented and unique style of playing combining both Irish and English whistle techniques

Billy Bo’s’un (Nick)

The other member of the original 2 Anchors the Bo’s’un with his Blackball haircut and his firm harmonies Billy compliments the Anchors’ sound and has extensive experience in the Folk World, both man and boy.

The Crafty Coxwain (George)

George is one of the newest recruits to the 2 Anchors.

George has a great love of traditional music, dance and song.

George is in possession of a fine, strong voice which adds force and vigour to the Anchors' performances.  His instinctive harmonies also add colour and gusto to the Anchors’ sound.

Eileen Dover the Handsome Cabin Boy (Debs)

Singer/songwriter Debra joins us with a long folk pedigree: both her father and grandfather played melodeon and she is presently learning the instrument in order to continue this tradition.

With a clear, intense and powerful voice she is presently developing her songwriting skills and most recently composed a song inspired by the tragic loss of Trevor Grills of the Fisherman’s Friends, and Paul McMullen which is well received by audiences and peers alike.

Willy O’Wohnty the Bo’s’un’s Mate

Multi-instrumentalist Will (ex Joyce the Librarian) joins the 2 Anchors and provides percussive folk 'cello, intricate concertina and guitar accompaniment.

He also adds a fine and powerful voice to the Anchors' line-up.  His clever harmonies weave in and out adding depth and polish to the Anchors' sound.

The 2 Anchors have a combined age of around 150 (and that’s mainly the Skipper…) and have performed at Falmouth Shanty Festival, Exmouth Festival and Gloucester Tall Ships Festival  as well as appearing at various gigs and Folk Clubs in the South West of England.
