Harwich International Sea Shanty Festival started very modestly in 2006, with two booked guests and a load of friends and was centred around one pub and the old fire station in the historic old port of Harwich. From these small beginnings, the festival now proudly incorporates the word “International” in it’s title and truly sees artists and visitors from all over the world. Despite this, we have kept the small, friendly feel to the festival, helped by the fine sense of camaraderie amongst festival guests and huge, enthusiastic support and community spirit from the immensely loyal local residents.
A typical weekend sees concerts, pub sessions, free open air entertainment, displays of maritime crafts and Napoleonic re-enactment, together with boat trips, workshops and brewery tours.
We are inspired by the magic of Shanties and sea songs set against the maritime history of Harwich old town, but endeavour to provide an experience with a broad appeal and are always open to suggestions, comments and indeed criticism. Please come and join us!
